Founded in 2004, WIDS undergoes two development stages: school of art design of Hubei Institute of Fine Arts and Chutian School of Huazhong Agricultural University. Upon approval of the Ministry of Education, it was formally renamed as Wuhan Institute of Design and Sciences (WIDS) in 2015. It was approved to admit students with reference to independent undergraduate art school in 2016 and has developed into an undergraduate institute with "design and engineering" as its characteristics. WIDS now has six schools: Jackie Chan School of Film and TV, School of Environmental Design, School of Art Design, School of Food and Biotechnology, School of Business and School of Information Engineering. It now has more than 8300 students and students have won more than 450 prizes in provincial level or above competitions in 2016, including 302 national level prizes.

WIDS running concepts: WIDS adheres to the running concepts of "basing on educating people, quality first and developing WIDS with its unique features"; positions at constructing multi-disciplinary and high-level applied undergraduate institute to actively create campus culture that "technology and art, tradition and modernity, strictness and romance reinforce and complement each other" and is committed to cultivating high quality professional art talents who are full of artistic spirit and scientific ideas, pay attention to the life, reflect the characteristics of times, serve the society and have innovation spirit and creativity ability and high quality applied talents who have innovation and entrepreneurship spirit, practical and hands-on ability and competitiveness in job market.

WIDS running conditions: The campus covers an area of 753.05mu and is located beside the beautiful Tangxun Lake. WIDS was planned and designed by both domestic and international famous artists. So it has charm of both eastern and western gardens and the buildings integrate the modern style and classic temperament. WIDS has complete teaching and living facilities: modern teaching building, laboratory building, library, art gallery, pottery museum, gymnasium, stadium, recreational and sports center for college students, student apartments and canteens and so on. The total construction area is 250,700m2. It has nearly 200 rooms of advanced film and TV media training center, environmental art design center, experimental teaching center of food and biology, experimental teaching center of computer and animation studio, digital image studio and stop-motion animation studio and set up 79 stable off-campus practice bases. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 48,159,000 Yuan and the library has 748,000 copies of paper collections.

Faculty: WIDS has high quality faculty. It now has 474 full-time teachers and 162 teachers employed from other institutions. WIDS sets up the post of chief professor for each major to comprehensively take charge of the major development. It flexibly hires high-level talents from both home and abroad: inviting Mr. Jackie Chan to be Dean of Jackie Chan School of Film and TV, hiring Feng Xiaogang, Zhang Guoli and Bao Manzhu and other renowned social personage, experts and professors to work as chair professors. The teachers have made fruitful achievements in teaching research and scientific research. The full-time teachers have published high level papers, applied 211 patents and won 51 prizes of provincial level or above in 2016.

Disciplines and majors: Oriented at industrial needs, WIDS makes use of the advantageous disciplines, characteristic majors and good quality teaching resources of Huazhong Agricultural University and Hubei Institute of Fine Arts which are century-old prestigious institute to offer 31 undergraduate majors and five college level majors. It has formed six major discipline clusters: film and TV, art design, environmental design, food and biology, economy and management, information technology, covering such six disciplinary categories as art, engineering, literature, economy, management and agriculture. Based on the development idea of professional clustering, WIDS promotes overlapping, penetration and fusion of disciplines and continuously enhances the connotation of disciplines. One discipline has been approved to provincial level key (cultivation) discipline, one major was approved as "pilot project of comprehensive major reform of Hubei province" and two disciplines were approved as "plan project for cultivating talents of strategic emerging (pillar) industries in Hubei province". WIDS and Hubei University of Technology formally started the joint training program of postgraduates from March 2017 and began the joint training of postgraduate of arts from 2017 on.

Exchange and cooperation: WIDS has international perspective in institute-running and actively develops international cooperation and exchange. It has set up good education cooperation and academic exchange relationship with many universities in France and Italy. It has become the sister-institute of Hanseo University, South Korea and successively sent nearly 500 students to exchange and study at Hanseo University. It has set up cooperation relationship with famous culture and education institutions in Beijing and Shanghai; it cooperates with Sparkle Roll Group Limited to offer directional training class; it cooperates with DeTao Masters Academy to offer "WIDS • DeTao Masters Class" which aims to cultivate the high-level versatile talents of the industry that have international outlook, innovation spirit and practical skills.
